Born in Montréal, Canada, Peter Francis Lawlor of Irish origin moved to Dublin, Ireland where he developed an interest in film and photography. He returned to Canada to study at Concordia University, Montréal where he graduated with a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) in Film.

In 1994 he moved to Brazil and became a permanent resident in 1999.

In 2004 he held his largest exhibition to date sponsored by the Canadian Embassy. The exhibition was titled 'THE BLACK AND WHITE OF RIO'. It was a huge success not only with public reaction but media reaction to the way in which he depicted the folk of Rio de Janeiro. The general consensus was that he managed to show the everyday happenings of Rio in a seldom seen way.

Other exhibitions about Rio are in the planning stage which will include a look at the African based religion Umbanda and also a different view of Carnival.

Along with exhibitions he is currently working on a book of the same title, 'The Black and White of Rio', which will include previously unseen material. He is also working on a book related to images captured throughout South America and Antarctica.

Other projects in the works include the seven continents. After visiting six continents and living for long periods of time on three, North America, South America and Europe, he plans to capture the moods and everyday life in diverse cities around the world in order to show similarities and differences between these far away and yet close cultures.

He currently lives between Rio de Janeiro and Montréal.
