Carnival

The Carnival in Rio represents complete freedom and a reversal of hierarchies which can be interpreted as representing the nation's sense of identity. This reversal is evident in everyday life resulting in a surreal quality affecting almost all things Brazilian from politics to football to family life to traffic lights. This identity is celebrated every year in the Brazilian version of Carnival. Bolivia is described as the Tibet of South America and its Carnival is testimony to this. A fun loving Carnival based on a mixture of Christian and Indigenous myths, this carnival represents many rituals, legends, customs and dances from all around the country. It's main theme is the contest between good and evil and the costumes worn represent this in a variety of elaborate ways. It's origins are Andean and based on Pachamama (Mother Land), Tio Satan (Uncle Satan) and the Candalaria Virgin.
